Tongue Tie & the Pediatric Airway: It’s More Than Just the Tongue

Tongue tie (ankyloglossia) is more than a feeding issue. It’s a restriction of the lingual frenulum that can alter tongue mobility, oral development, and even airway dynamics. On the BackTable ENT Podcast, Brennan Dodson, MD, FARS, discussed how a restricted tongue can contribute to pediatric sleep-disordered breathing, mouth breathing, poor oral posture, and long-term craniofacial development changes. The science is evolving, but we know this: the tongue is a key player in airway stability. When it can’t rest and function properly against the palate, the ripple effects can impact sleep, growth, and quality of life.

What We Do Differently at Bridger ENT

At Bridger ENT, we don’t treat tongue tie in isolation — we evaluate the whole airway. Dr. Dodson has performed tongue-tie release procedures for many years and is highly experienced in advanced techniques, including precise lingual frenuloplasty when indicated. But surgery is only one piece. We emphasize careful patient selection, objective evaluation (sometimes including sleep studies), and evidence-based decision-making. Just as importantly, we integrate pre- and post-operative myofunctional therapy to retrain tongue function — because mobility without rehabilitation is a missed opportunity.

A True Team Approach

Tongue tie care works best as a team sport. We collaborate closely with pediatric airway dentists, sleep specialists, myofunctional therapists, speech-language pathologists, and other airway-focused providers to create individualized treatment plans. Some patients benefit from therapy alone. Some need coordinated dental expansion. Others may require ENT surgical intervention as part of broader airway management. Our goal is not simply to “clip a tie” — it’s to optimize breathing, sleep, growth, and long-term health.

If you’re concerned about your child’s tongue mobility, mouth breathing, or sleep quality, schedule a consultation with Dr. Dodson. No referral is required, and online booking is available. At Bridger ENT, we combine expertise, precision, and collaboration to help kids breathe — and sleep — better.
