PRP in Smell Loss
Olfactory dysfunction (OD) such as ANOSMIA (complete loss of smell), HYPOSMIA (partial loss of smell), and PAROSMIA (altered smell) can greatly affect one's health and quality of life. While previous treatments such as olfactory training and medications have failed most OD patients, cutting-edge Intra-Nasal Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections have been shown to improve sense of smell. CUTTING EDGE, SAFE
Research has shown intra-nasal PRP injection is safe and can improve smell dysfunction more than any other treatment. PRP is an emerging treatment, not FDA approved nor covered by insurance. For many years, the safety of PRP has been proven in dermatology, orthopedics, and wound science. PRP, purified from the patient's own whole blood, works its magic through factors which stimulate healing and tissue regeneration.
CANDIDATES
We recommend any adult with a >6 month history of smell dysfunction seek a screening visit. The screening visit is free and includes: a brief rhinologic history, nasal endoscopy (scope), and comprehensive self-assessment testing. Patients who pass the screening criteria are candidates for PRP.
SIMPLE, EASY
Research has proven intra-nasal PRP injections are safe with minimal side effects (mild swelling or irritation inside the nose). The steps are simple: Blood is drawn, PRP is isolated via centrifugation, the nose is numbed, then PRP is injected into the olfactory zones inside the nose. We use the same PRP protocols as the Stanford Medicine group (PurePRP preparation kit from Emcyte Corporation; from Int Forum Allergy Rhinol. 2025;15:420–427).
They recommend 3 total injection sessions (2-4 weeks between each session). We recommend patients continue smell training for 1 year.
COST
